TKAM 5

  1. Why will no one hire Tom’s wife?
-No one would want to hire Tom’s wife because he is a negro and after the case between the Ewells, no one would want anything to do with him or his family. Plus, she had a home and children to attend to.

  1. How has Scout grown?
-She became more aware of the things that happens around her and when things change, she knows its not because it just happen, but because it’s for the better. Her knowledge is expanding, she is full of curiosity. Other than that, she started to be more of a lady than a tomboy.

  1. How are the girls treated differently than boys, why is this?
-The ladies were not able to attend the jury, they had the responsibility of doing housework, while the men go out and do other heavy duty works. There were no equal rights at that time, therefore the ladies were not able to be as free as the men were.

  1. Why does Aunt Alexandria dislike Calpurnia?
-Aunt Alexandra has thoughts that Calpurnia, being a black lady, is a bad influence on Jem and Scout.

  1. Is Aunt Alexandria a racist?
-Yes, she was not a fan of Calpurnia working for her brother because she is a negro and she wanted her out.

  1. Why did Mr Cunningham retreat?
-Mr. Cunningham left because Scout kept asking him questions about his son, which, I guess, made him feel bad about the things he tended to do,

  1. What did Scout do and how does her presence change the situation
-She kept asking him questions about his son, Walter Cunningham, one of her classmates. Scout making a small conversation with Mr.Cunningham made him feel a sense of guilt and ashamed.

  1. How does using the word “them” relate to racism?
-The term “them” is what people call the negroes.

  1. How do people react in the mob – would they react differently on their own?
-Some people found scout’s way of making the mob go away, relevant and unconvincing. But Scout, being a bright child, left the audience thinking on how could she be so clueless and unaware of what was going to happen. Scout, being a child and being able to persuade and convince Mr.Cunningham to leave with his mob was a way of him showing kindness. As atticus also said “A gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still human.”

  1. Examine the Mob Scene.
-The mob scene gave the audience a sense of good in bad people. As Scout, being able to see the good in everyone, being taught that way, she makes small conversation with Mr.Cunningham about his son, making him and his mob ashamed. The mob member’s racism and bad habits simply hides their humanity and goodness. But scout, seeing the goodness in everyone and Mr.Cunningham, realizing her politeness, made him respond in civil kindness. Finally, the mob walked away.

  1. What is the significance of Jem and Scout sitting in the “Gallery”?
-Jem and Scout, being in the colored section in the trial scene made people realize that it is ok to be with people who are not the same color as you are. Jem, Dill, and Scout all lacked racism that the crowd  of white people in the courtroom made known. The three kids separated themselves from those who called them “nigger-lover”.

  1. What does Dill mean when he makes the statement that all he can do about folks is to make them laugh. Do you agree?
-He means that even in serious matters, he can’t help but make irrelevant comments and that  people don't take him seriously. Which I agree, he tells his stories in a way not even possible, over exaggerating.

  1. Is Boo a prisoner or a refugee? Discuss.
-He is a prisoner in his own home because at almost in the end of the book, Scout realizes that the reason why Boo never actually came out is because of the judgmental people and all the unfairness in their society that causes people to either kill themselves or be put to face consequences for no reason.

  1. Describe the Cunninghams.
-They are a poor family who doesn’t take any money because they know they are not  going to be able to return it. The cunninghams return not in money, but in labor.

  1. Look at the term Hypocracy.
-the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform

  1. Why is the missionary circle ironic. What is irony?
-The missionary circle is for the ladies to talk about religion and the things they need to help christianize, but they end up gossiping about people and starts making nasty remarks about Tom and other negroes.
  1. Why did Tom go mad in the prison?
-He knew he was not going to be able to have an appeal, so Tom wanted to escape, there was no way a black man could live in a white man’s world. He was tired of being accused and always getting the blame for everything he didn’t do, he just didn’t want to live anymore if people are going to be unfair.

  1. How does the White community respond to Tom’s death? Why?
-“Maycomb was interested by the news of Tom’s death for perhaps two days; two days was enough for the information to spread through the county.”(322) They didn’t really care, they said his death was a typical thing negroes would do.

  1. How is Scout developing / becoming more mature?
-Scout starts to move closer to adulthood by getting close to Aunt Alexandria. Attending the missionary circle with her aunt, scout starts to see her better side. As the ladies talk about the death of Tom, Aunt Alexanderia and Scout displays their courage and maintain themselves and stand side by side  not caring about the white people’s opinion on racism.

  1. Look at the contrast between fictitious danger of the Haunts and the real danger of Bob Ewell.
  1. Who stuck in the knife. Was this act justified?-
The sheriff said Bob fell on the knife and killed himself, but he just wanted to spare Boo from the public and their harsh comments. But exposing Boo to the public would be “sort of shootin’ a mockingbird” as Scout said.

  1. Is Atticus correct in his changing opinion about the courtroom?
  1. What do you think about the comment, Bringing out the truth would mean punishing someone who is essentially good. What does this mean about the law?
  1. Is justice different from the law? Is being right the same as being correct?
  1. How has Scout changed?
  1. Is Boo any more safe from people now than at the beginning?

To Kill A Mockingbird- Worksheet 4 !

1) What do the presents show us about Boo? What do the children’s reactions tell us about the society they live in?
The presents displays that Arthur Boo Radley was not a mean child, but a friendly one. He gave Scout a blanket showing his kindness. The children’s reaction tell us that the society is full of judgment and lacks information.
2) Describe how Boo must feel seeing the enactment of his past and the scissors every day on the porch?
He must feel really bad. He might feel like the people don't understand his scissor incident.Maybe the people did not know what was going on in the household. Boo could feel bad that people view the incident in a opposite way.
3) Who was laughing at Scout and what does this tell us about what Boo is really like?
Boo Radley, it tells us that Boo is a really nice child and not disobedient child.
4) Why does Mr. Radley cement up the tree and what does this tell us about his character?
He cemented it up so that the items that somebody placed in the tree could stop. It tells us that he is a mean man and has a bad enough attitude.
5) Institutionalized prejudice: How are does Scout’s reaction to the kindness of Boo a function of this?
Scout viewed him as a psycho child that stabbed his father. It is an example of industrialized prejudice because Scout assumed Boo to be a mean person, but his kindness showed her something different.
6) Why is Atticus defending Tom? Should he take the case on?
He is being accused of doing something he did not even do. Atticus should take the case on because he is a good lawyer and no other lawyer is willing to take the case on.
7) What does the mad dog incident show about Atticus?
He has power but does not use it.
8) What does it mean to say that it is a sin to kill the mockingbird?
A mockingbird does not harm anyone so it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, so in the act of slaughtering the mockingbird, you are supposedly sinning.
9) What is prejudice?
Prejudice is disliking a person, or a group of people for no apparent reason.
10) Give dictionary definition of prejudice.
Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.
11) What is prejudice in society? in school? in TKAM?
A prejudice in society is how some men view that women are not as strong as males. In school, a prejudice could be a person that hates a person based on what they did. In TKAM, the prejudice is the people in the story that viewed the Radleys as evil entities.
12) Why does prejudice occur?
I think prejudice occurs because of people’s opinions. Their opinions are opinionated to what they want and whoever is not a person that fits their opinions, they look down on them.
13) From the novel, find 5 examples of characters who are victims of prejudice. Name some of their outer appearances which make them susceptible to prejudice, and find some of their inner qualities which are not always apparent upon a first reading of the text.
  1. Atticus Finch is known as a “nigger-lover" but really Atticus is just a helpful person helping a colored person.
  2. Boo Radley viewed as a mean person. Boo is actually nice to the children.
  3. Mrs. Dubose as a mean old-lady. Mrs. Dubose was just a sick lady who was lonely.
  4. Ms. Caroline as a mean teacher that does not want her students to learn but she is a teacher that just was not prepared to teach an advanced student.
  5. Calpurnia as an uneducated person but she was actually smart and was able to teach Scout to read.

Jem ( Chp 11) "Her wrinkles are the scariest things, help!"
There was this old mean lady in our town. She would call both my sister and father names. It ticked me off most of the times but there was nothing I could do. My father told me to be a "gentleman". And even if I was and taught my sister to be, the old lady continued on. But when she called my father "No better than the nigger and trash he works for!" My body steamed and my head blurred. I didn't think about what anybody else said, I stop being nice to her. She didn't deserve it. She been dissing my family. I was so mad, I cut her bushes off! I mean forget her. But my consequence was the worst, reading to her was terrifying. But it was sweet how Scout stayed with through the month. I wonder why Atticus had so much respect. Well his calling for me now. Good night .

TKAM: Reflection Journal Chapter 7,8,9

Jem ( Chp 8) ; Creepy things from creepy people

Miss Maudie’s house went on fire! Everything started to go on fire!     I was scared to death. I had to keep an eye on my sister  the whole time. What i don’t get is why Atticus told us to stand in front of the Radley’s place  to see where the wind is blowing. The weirder thing is I noticed my sister had a blanket around her . I know she thought it was from me but It wasn't from me. That is what scared me. Who put that blanket on her? Little did i know it was from Boo , my father says. And we didn't even see him! It was so creepy ! We could've just turned around and solve our problems. Everything, every time was getting weirder and weirder. It made me curious. But as the night went i felt sorry for the town. Its already late. GTG!

TKAM: Relection Journal Chapters 4,5,6,

Today my sister had some filthy, unknown gum in her mouth. It was so disgusting, I just wanted to yell at her , I did. I couldn't stand it so I made her show me where she found it. Little did I know, she found it at the Radelys place, the least I expected. I was terrified but I had to show my sister I was tough. When we reached home, I started to think about the Radelys. Maybe I should find out the mystery. I am tired of being confuse. I don't know but Dill is here ! Yay! I can't wait to play with me. But my sister is going to be there again. She's so girly, it scares me. It kind of better because I love being the boss of games. But my dad always has to ask questions like gees. He can't mind his own business. He always ask to ask "What you playing?" He can't let us kids have some privacy. Every time I am in bed I wanted to solve my mystery and I will , one day.

TKAM: Reflection Journal Chapter 1,2,3

Jem (Chapter 1,2,3): "Story of my life but still I rise"

As hard as I try to move, I still have the idea of my mother. I miss her soooooo much. My sister does not understand, but when we play games, I start to think of her and stand the thought of her being gone. So I walk away from the game most of the times. Its hard not having a mother around. Especially living in a creepy place you don't understand. Everybody has their issues. Earlier today, I met Dill. When i first met him he seem to little for me but he was pretty nice, smart too. I shared all the information Stephanie shared with me about the Radleys, It made Dill interested which was weird. It lead me to a dare. Something I am good at. Dill thought I was scared but no way. I was just being respectful to the property. Really I was scared but I couldn't admit that. Finally Dill made the dare easier just to touch the house and run back. When Dill said "I won't say you ran out on a dare" (Dill 18) It motivated me to do it. Now when I pass the Radley's house . scared off my bottom, I run and run. There's no way I wanted to be involved with them. At least I understand the mature ways.It makes me look so good. You should try it some time.
